Symphony No. 1 (2005)

Part I (excerpt)

I. Largo (excerpt)

Part II (excerpt)

II. Lento (excerpt)

Part III (excerpt)

Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra

Alan Shen, conductor

Shortly after moving to Seattle I joined the Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra, which was one of my musical homes during my time in Seattle. After serving as assistant principal cello for a few seasons, the orchestra commissioned me to compose my first orchestral work, my Symphony No. 1.

The concept that I was interested in exploring in this piece was how the same musical material can be used in different, even opposing, contexts. In the first movement, the music is desolate, conflicted, and ends in nihilism and hopelessness. In the second and final movement, the same material that was used to develop the first movement now informs music of peace and serenity.
